Michael Olise received a second yellow card in the Champions League on Tuesday, was sent off, and will miss Bayern Munich’s next match against Arsenal. The red card came in a 3-3 draw with Viking in Stavanger, Norway.
The referee was still showing Olise a yellow card for a tactical foul that stopped a Viking counterattack when the Bayern forward tossed the ball he was holding at Viking captain Zlatko Tripic‘s head. That earned him a second booking within seconds, to cheers from the home crowd. Bayern led 3-2 at the time, but the dismissal helped Viking get back into the match. Tripic crossed for Herman Haugen, who headed in the equalizer in the 90th minute. The sending-off was Olise’s first in a senior game and earns the France international a one-match ban.
Kane Backs Teammate to Learn From Mistake
Harry Kane said Olise will have to take responsibility and learn from the incident. “It’s a shame because obviously we have big games coming up in the Champions League now and he’s going to be gutted to miss those games,” Kane said. “But this is football. Sometimes mistakes can happen, it’s life.”
Bayern had trailed 2-0 before fighting back. Kane scored two second-half goals in quick succession, extending his run of scoring in consecutive Champions League games to nine. Luis Díaz had put Bayern ahead with a third goal just before Olise was sent off.
The result halts Bayern’s momentum after they opened their Champions League campaign last month with a 5-0 win over fellow Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt. “We should have won the game with the second-half performance,” Kane added. “You take the point and you move on.”
