Man United make decision ahead of Bournemouth clash, with an update on Michael Carrick

Manchester United have signalled that Michael Carrick will stay in charge for Sunday’s Premier League game against Bournemouth.

The club have confirmed they will hold a pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, an indication that Carrick will not be sacked after Wednesday’s 4-1 thrashing by Como.

Carrick held his hands up in apology after the defeat.

United’s poor run continues

United have won only two games all season and are on a run of seven matches without a win. They sit 13th in the Premier League and 20th in the Champions League table, and they have also been knocked out of the Carabao Cup.

Captain Bruno Fernandes criticised Carrick’s tactics in Como, particularly the fact that the team was not told to press. That came a week after defender Lisandro Martinez launched an attack on sporting director Jason Wilcox.

Carrick: “Not acceptable”

Carrick said United’s performance in Como was “not acceptable” and that he was “angry” after it. The former United midfielder apologised to the travelling supporters and said the defeat was “not about me”.

United’s players had a pre-planned day off on Thursday. The squad will report to Carrington for training on Friday, when Carrick will hold his pre-match press conference in the afternoon.

Fixtures ahead

After facing Bournemouth at Old Trafford, United will travel to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea next Saturday. They will then host Roma in the Champions League and Aston Villa in the Premier League before the international break.
