Harry Kane missed a penalty and was punished by Fabio Silva’s late equaliser as Borussia Dortmund earned a 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker at the Allianz Arena.
This was Kane’s first appearance since winning the Ballon d’Or, and Bayern honoured him in Munich before kick-off. He made his entrance separately from the other players. The game itself turned into a nightmare for him in the second half.
With Bayern leading through Konrad Laimer’s goal, Kane saw his penalty strike the crossbar. Serhou Guirassy then levelled the match after the Bayern striker had been dispossessed in the build-up. Kane’s assist for Dayot Upamecano’s goal was not enough to save him.
Silva came off the bench to equalise for Niko Kovac’s side in the 89th minute. Lennart Karl then struck the crossbar with the last kick of a dramatic game, but Dortmund held on to remain level on points at the top of the Bundesliga table.
Jobe Bellingham had earlier appeared to open the scoring for Dortmund following a mix-up involving Upamecano. A VAR check, however, showed Carney Chukwuemeka colliding with the goalkeeper as Bellingham swept the ball home, and the goal was ruled out.
Bayern, who came into the match averaging over five goals per home game this season, took advantage almost immediately. Michael Olise, who had earlier struck the post, sent Laimer through on goal, and the Austrian finished at the second attempt.
Dortmund’s leveller was a shock given Bayern’s dominance, but neat work by Guirassy created the opening that left Kane sweating. Kane appeared to have spared his own blushes with a key assist, but Silva’s intervention made it a night to forget for Bayern’s No 9.
Bayern face a difficult period, with a hectic schedule arriving while they are without their recovering head coach Vincent Kompany and dealing with a growing injury list. Luis Diaz is already out, and Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry went off injured in the first half.
Bayern will be relieved to keep their unbeaten record intact, but this was an opportunity to open a gap on their great rivals. Silva’s strike, helped by Kane’s rare profligacy, leaves both clubs with identical records.
